We’ve changed our name! Introducing: Institute H21

The first months of 2019 have marked a period of significant change for our Institute. We have merged forces with the civic participation experts from our former sister-company D21, who work with cities, schools and non-profits to give citizens a voice in decision making. Following the merge, we also decided to change our name. Why?

Having taken D21’s participation mission safely under our wings, our sister-company will be ceasing to operate in its current form. You can read more about this decision here (click). You will now find our Participace 21 solution, which engages citizens in decision-making, on our website. We´re also continuing to develop our online platform which has already enabled more than 800,000 participants to reach consensus on more than 250 projects all around the world.

Why did we decide to change the name of our Institute, while already being renowned in the Czech Republic for our flagship Prezident 21 project? As social innovators, we aim to increase the level of global consciousness and accountability by involving individuals in decision-making, not only in politics. We strive to create constructive dialogue and find consensual solutions using the Janecek multiple vote method (D21). We also think about the future and want our approach to be expressed in the name of the Institute itself. We no longer saw our former name as being fitting of our future endeavours.

As humanity, we face ecological, social and security challenges. On the other hand, we are surrounded by technology and artificial intelligence that have become an indispensable part of our lives. Can we connect these technologies with human energy so that we can maximise individual happiness and unite as a global society or will we descend into global conflict?

H21 is a philosophical concept that presents a positive vision of the future and it can be understood as the next stage in the evolution of society, becoming a global organism where individuals are connected through modern technology. In current developed societies, humanity is better off than ever before. However, this state does not seem to be sustainable in the long-term and neither are the natural resources that are slowly disappearing due to human consumption. We are approaching a critical point. What will the “Human 21” future of humanity in the 21st century look like? What world will we leave to the next generations? Will it be a happy harmony of the human mind and modern technologies or will global society crash?

Even in the current world, artificial intelligence does a lot of work for us. Its participation will increase into the foreseeable future, saving labour and probably replacing human resources in certain jobs/tasks. At the same time, new positions that currently do not exist will be created. Despite fast technological evolution and changes in society, we should not forget fundamental existential questions. These are the questions which play an important role in the concept of H21. There is no real reason why the advancement of the global economy should not enable all global citizens to enjoy higher quality of life and to boost levels of happiness, (whose index is now regularly measured).

„We will be able to freely choose how we spend our time, the most valuable commodity. All the routine and hard work can be done for us by artificial intelligence. In Human 21, every person will be able to take advantage of great synergy through combination of rational thinking and feelings. It is likely that our emotions will be more important than our intelligence because artificial intelligence will fundamentally surpass us in this respect and it will be freely available,” says mathematician and visionary Karel Janeček about the concept of H21.
